Grand River Hospital volunteer wins Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club Dream Home Lottery

We are thrilled to tell you that the winner of the Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club Dream Home Lottery is Grand River Hospital volunteer, Carolyn Shaughnessy.

After finishing her shift at Grand River Hospital on June 29, Carolyn received a voicemail from the Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club. Knowing it was the draw day for the Dream Home Lottery, she thought she won the 50/50 draw. Instead, she had won the $1.1 million dream home!

“It is a true blessing for our family. We are thankful to have won,” said Carolyn. Carolyn and her family have a tradition of doing a group lottery.

For Carolyn, the best part about winning was that the proceeds from the lottery benefited Grand River Hospital, where she volunteers and which holds a special place for her and her family.

Four years ago, her husband was admitted to Grand River Hospital’s stroke program, sadly he passed away. A year later, Carolyn began volunteering at the hospital. She enjoys listening and talking to families while they wait for loved ones.

“I find volunteering is being social with purpose. For me, knowing that at the time of the draw I was volunteering at one of the beneficiaries made winning very special.”

Carolyn also has a grand daughter who is a nursing student currently fulfilling her placement and training at Grand River Hospital.

Winning may have been unexpected for Carolyn and her family, but they are grateful.
