Skin Diagnostic Assessment Unit

What is a Skin Diagnostic Assessment Unit (SDAU)?

It is the only program of its kind in Waterloo-Wellington where people with unusual skin lesions can be seen by a team of physicians and other health care professionals to make an early diagnosis and start treatment that might be needed. These skin lesions may or may not be cancerous, but early treatment is important.

Who is on the SDAU Team?

The regional SDAU involves the family physician, along with a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, radiation therapist, radiation oncologist, nurse and a social worker, depending on the needs of the patient. Not all patients will need to see all of the team members.

The team members assess, diagnose and treat skin lesions in a supportive environment. The first phase of care includes the diagnosis of skin lesions which may require a biopsy. Depending on the results of the biopsy, a treatment regimen using medications or superficial radiation may be recommended by the team.

How do I get a referral to the Skin Diagnostic Assessment Unit?

Your family doctor or dermatologist will need to refer you to the Skin Diagnostic Assessment Unit. He/she can refer on-line here or by sending a referral to the Referrals Office.

Where are Skin Diagnostic Assessment Units Located in the Region?

There is only one assessment unit in this region, and it is located at the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre. SDAUs are located in various regional cancer centres within the province.
