Spending time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be a challenging experience for babies and their families—that’s why the Sandra Schmirler Foundation is committed to giving them the chance to be champions. Last year, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation generously funded two cardiorespiratory monitors for Grand River Kids to help ensure that our care teams can provide critical monitoring for our smallest and youngest patients.

Having proudly donated over $7 million to 93 different hospital neonatal intensive care units in Canada, including the NICU at Grand River Hospital, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation was created in January 2001 as a legacy to three-time world curling champion and Olympic gold medalist, Sandra Schmirler, in recognition and celebration of her love of family after she passed away from cancer at the young age of 36. Their vision is to fund the purchase of life-saving equipment to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) so every baby in Canada born too soon, too small or too sick has the chance to grow up and become a champion, like Sandra Schmirler.
